We’re delighted to announce that Tim Woolmer, CTO and Founder of YASA was recently awarded the Mundy Award for Engineering, at the prestigious Autocar Awards 2023. This award recognises his incredible engineering achievements, developing axial flux electric motors that are more powerful, compact and lighter than the conventional radial flux design.
The YASA Axial Flux Motors feature in the Ferrari 296GTB, which was another Award winner, taking the Five-Star Car. The 296GTB is the first Ferrari road car with rear-wheel drive plug-in (PHEV) hybrid architecture, which sees the internal combustion engine integrated with a rear YASA Axial Flux Motor.
Speaking about the Award, Tim told us:
“Whilst I am honoured to have been chosen to receive the AutoCar Mundy Award For Engineering in 2023, it is really a fantastic recognition of the work done by so many people since YASA was formed in 2009 to bring an initial prototype to commercial reality. We are excited about what is to come for the business over the next 14 years and beyond”
The Mundy Award for Engineering is named after Harry Mundy, a talented engineer behind the Lotus twin-cam engine, BRM V16 F1 engine, and the most recent Jaguar V12 - and once Autocar technical editor.
Tim has joined a select group of inspiring and game changing engineers, including Professor Gordon Murray CBE, who won the award in 2022 & Martin Becker, chief engineer at Aston Martin Lagonda Ltd, who won the award in 2021.
As well as winning the prestigous award, it was an extra special night, as it was also Tims birthday!
